Whether you have an old piece of furniture that needs some repair or a cherished heirloom piece that needs restored, refinishing furniture can be satisfying. You will be amazed at how stunning an old piece of furniture can be with a new finish. In addition, the piece that you spent time refurbishing will be treasured for years to come. So, before you toss that well-loved armoire – look at the potential and dream of how it could add to your home.
Refurbishing furniture can be a timely yet rewarding experience. Other times, it can be a quick day project! Depending on your ambition and the amount of work that needs done on each furniture piece can dictate how long your refurbishing project will take. Often, there are areas that are uneven or need repair, for instance, missing veneer, chipped wood, split tabletop, or deep scratches.
Durham’s® Water Putty can be your solution when it comes to needing a wood filler on a painted wood project. Durham’s is a dry powder that becomes putty when mixed with water. Because it is a powder, it is ready when you need it. No drying out overtime! You can also mix as much or as little as you need.
To use Durham’s on your project, simply mix up the amount that you need following the instructions on the can (three parts powder to one part water by weight). Once you have a thick peanut butter consistency, you are ready to fill any voids in your project. It is important to push the putty into the void to eliminate any air bubbles. After you have applied putty, smooth it off as much as possible to help eliminate sanding needed. Durham’s dries Rock Hard® so can be difficult to sand if you leave substantial amounts of putty that needs to be removed. A sanding block is recommended to help prevent sanding the surrounding wood areas down further as wood is often softer than the putty patch.
Once your repair has dried, it is safe to use a high quality primer and paint (Durham’s will NOT take most surface stains). If the putty is still wet, the paint will peel from your piece as the moisture continues to work its way out of the wood putty patch.
Lastly, sit back and be amazed and your newly refurbished furniture piece! What a wonderful way to preserve old furniture and make it new again!
